Art Direction

Art Direction is where I learned to lead people and to understand strong strategies that make brands successful. An Art Director’s resource tool belt is his key to success. Finding and managing great talent and directing them to maintain the integrity of the initial objective is how results are cultivated in the end.

I enjoyed 10 yrs as an Art Director for agencies such as Dye VanMol & Lawrence, Bohan, White Thompson and redpepper. Working with talented creatives such as photographers, illustrators and producers is what makes Art Direction so much fun.

Below is a collection of work through those years and current work with new clients–Art Direction is in my blood man. I’ll never stop doing it, however, today I’m fortunate to choose clients that fit my philosophies of creative process, like parallel action. From campaigns to pitches to one-offs, choosing what to put here was the most difficult part.

Nossi College of Art – Ad for Seventeen Magazine

As the Coordinator for the college I often have the opportunity to art direct some choice projects. This ad reaches a very large number of teenagers, one of our largest demos, within the United States, a circulation of 108,000 in Tennessee alone. The only mandatory we were given by the publication was that the full page ad had to include the Nashville spotlight header at the top. This job reminded me of how I hate working within large publication’s spec requirements. I mean, everyone knows you’re not going to trim anywhere near the “live area”. God forbid you cross that line. In the end, it turned out great.

Agency MJ– Direct Marketing Campaign

From online initiatives to traditional direct mail tactics, the objective was to get Mollie, the Agency’s owner and client representative, in front of Creative Directors, Art Directors and advertising agencies to hire their photographers.
